So here we are ...survived another fun filled Christmas. I spent the last couple of days in my pj's, relaxing, knitting and watching a ton of great movies and I've started the day off with these delicious 'Dreamy Creamy' scones and home made marmalade my dear friend and neighbour, Laura, made for me. Paired with some steamy, hot, spiced Khristmas Koffee and that's just about as good as it gets! I'm off today to catch some after Christmas sales but I hope you've found time to relax and enjoy everything around you!

How To Make a Baby Rag Quilt

I searched high an low online on how to make a rag quilt so I thought I would post how I made mine. I have two new grandchildren due in 2010 so I thought I would make some last minute quilts for them and give it to their parents at Christmas.
Off I headed to my local sewing store and was I ever pleased to find out that flannel was on sale 2 meters for the price of one!!

For one rag quilt you will need:
I meter flannel in print (45" wide)
1 meter flannel in coordinating print (45" wide)
3/4 meter white diaper flannel (45 " wide)
rotary cutter and mat
metal ruler
cardstock to make template
The photos above coordinate with the steps in this tutorial.
1. Start by making a template out of cardstock. MIne was a 6 inch square. Use a rotary cutter to out 42 squares of each fabric and keep the metal ruler on the edge to ensure exact cuts.
2. It's a good idea to create a table with word processing program on your computer that measures 6 squares across and 7 down so that you can plan your color design.
3. I made the front and back exactly the same for ease but you can do whatever you wish. Each square goes like this: Place right side down on the table, place lining flannel on top then place wrong side on top creating a 'sandwich'.
4. Start sewing the squares together using a 7/8 " seam allowance, placing wrong sides together as these open seams are what creates the 'rag' part of the quilt. Sew around the outside leaving raw edges showing.
5.The wrong side will look the way you would think the right side should look.
6. Once all the squares and rows are sewn together, take a sharp pair of scissors and make little snips on every seam and all the way around the outside edge.
7. Wash and dry a couple of times, trimming any loose threads until the seams are really fuzzy.
8. The finished quilt should measure a little smaller than 36 x 42 inches oor about the size of the bottom of an average playpen.

H1N1 and Happy Halloween!

Our Halloween Saturday started out with my husband lining up at 7:00 AM at the immunization station located our local mall for the H1N1 vaccine. I joined him at 10 Am for a total wait time of 4 1/2 hours. The crowds throughout the city have been unbelieveable . I tossed around the idea of getting the shot or not but because I was in the high risk group and had pneumonia a couple of times last winter I thought it would be a good idea and I'm glad that I did because they are now very short on the vaccine in our area.
The rest of the day was filled with getting ready for our craft sale and ended with our grandsons coming over to trick or treat. I was dressed as an angel and they were all dressed from the cat family. A lion, a jaguar and a tiger...oh my!

Harvest Time.....

I can't believe that summer is almost coming to an end. I went out to check on our tomatoes and they're just about ready and I need to harvest my herbs so I think I'll make some yummy pesto so I can enjoy a taste of this summer sunshine in the middle of winter.
Pesto Recipe from my dear Italian friend Teresa
1 large bunch of basil, leaves only, washed and dried
3 medium cloves of garlic
bunch of parsley leaves
one small onion
roughly 3/4 cup Parmesan, loosely packed and FRESHLY GRATED
A few tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil

Start chopping the garlic, onion and parsley along with about 1/3 of the basil leaves. Once this is loosely chopped add more basil, chop some more, add the rest of the basil, chop some more. I scrape and chop, gather and chop. At this point the basil and garlic should be a very fine mince. Add half of the Parmesan, chop. Add the rest of the Parmesan, and chop. In the end you want a chop so fine that you can press all the ingredients into a basil "cake" - see the photo up above. Transfer the pesto "cake" to a small bowl (not much bigger than the cake). Cover with a bit of olive oil, it doesn't take much, just a few tablespoons.
You can set this aside or place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it or freeze it or saute it in a pan and blend in the blender. Just before serving give the pesto a quick stir to incorporate some of the oil into the basil.
Use as a pasta toping.
Makes about 1 cup.

The wedding of Sheena and Curtis

The wedding was storybook perfect in every way! There are some amazing things that I learned after 3/3 successful marriages of our children.
1. Never under estimate the power of ritual, tradition and the opportunity to celebrate your family both old and new, friends and loved ones.
2. Take time as the parent to rest in between the ceremony and the reception not only to regather yourself, but to also reflect on the beauty and wonder of the day.
3. Cherish your family and friends and be sure to tell them how much they mean to you
4. Offer guidance to the couple wthout taking control of their wedding...this is their day to be shared in the way they want it ot be.
5. ....and the most important of all Accept help for the preparations, rehearsal dinner etc.from those who offer.
I know it made all the difference for my enjoyment. I had a fantastic time! Thank you to my wonderful friends and family!
Congratulations Sheena and Curtis! We love you!
